Our first step is a basic one. Backup.
Using whichever FTP client you wish, copy ALL of your files down to your harddrive for safe keeping.
Then get a copy of your backup. In most cases you can use phpMyAdmin, and do a simple export of all the tables (should be selected by default), and save as file..
German Pictures but you get the idea...

Select all of the tables....
And at the bottom, save as.... Choose a filename

Choose the download package that is right for you. If you choose an Update package, be sure it is from the right version you are running to the next. If there is not one available, use the full package.
Download this, and unzip it to prepare for upload.
When you upload, overwrite the existing files that are in place. Be sure once your upload is complete, you edit the config.php file with the appropriate info for your database connection, as this file is often replaced with a default.
Simply login to the admin section and you should see something like this.
On Click here to resolve the issue, click the upgrade process.
Again on Click here to resolve the problem by clicking the appropriate updates. Below you should then see all status lights turn green.
The process for the Plugin's is virtually identical. Be sure to click on that plugins menu to and verify its functionality.
You should know that most updates have new changes for plugins as well, so check them..
Also when you feel you have been through everything, do a final check by clicking the Update under EQDKP Update Section in the admin panel.
This is a manual check and is the most thorough.
Red means you need an update, green means you're all set.
When you are all done... for good measure.. clear the cache!
